Nicholls State University (NSU), located in Thibodaux, Louisiana,
is a comprehensive, regional university serving south central
Louisiana and beyond. The 287-acre campus, once part of historic
Acadia Plantation, fronts on Bayou Lafourche about 50 miles
southwest of New Orleans and 60 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.
At Nicholls, students acquire the tools they need to succeed in
their careers in a setting that is known worldwide for its celebrated
music, culinary heritage and welcoming community.
Nicholls offers a comprehensive range of academic programs,
providing young men and women the preparation to succeed in
virtually any professional field. Several programs - including
biology, business, culinary, arts, education and nursing g- have
earned reputations second to none in the United States. In recent
years, Nicholls has emerged as a vibrant and regional center for
scientific, technological, cultural, educational and economic
leadership. The development of new master's programs is further
fueling the rise of Nicholls as the region's premier university.
Nicholls State University is a member of the University of
Louisiana System and is accredited by the Commission on
Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
to award degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, master's and
specialist levels.
In sports, Nicholls State is a member of the Southland Conference
and is a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association. Nicholls teams are perennial challengers for major
honors of 14 various sports. In recent years, Nicholls
has participated in NCAA tournaments in football, men's and
women's basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, and volleyball. |
The Chef John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State
University attracts students from across the United States
and the world. Nicholls was the first public university in
the country to offer a bachelor's degree in Culinary Arts.
The Department of Biological Sciences features award-
winning
faculty who involve their undergraduate students in
research
projects. Students also have the opportunity to
study at the
nearby Louisiana Universities Marine
Consortium.
The Nursing and Allied Health departments provide extensive
facilities for student clinical experience and maintain an
ongoing
partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health
and Hospitals.
The Department of Teacher Education provides degree and
licensure programs for a high percentage of the region's teachers.
In recent years, 97 percent of Nicholls Education
students taking
the PRAXIS teacher certification exam
passed the exam on the
first attempt, well above state
averages.
The departments of Accounting and Information Systems at
Nicholls include distinguished professors from the business
world and state-of-the-art student computer laboratories with
access to extensive software, databases and the Internet.
The Child, Family and Social Services program at Nicholls
boasts an internship program with more than 75 social
service
agencies in the region and partnerships with the Louisiana
departments of Social Services and Addictive
Behavior.
