Dear Baton Rouge and Visitors,
Our goal for Baton Rouge is to be America's next great city and as you can see from
the information contained in the Sunshine Pages, we are well on our way.
Throughout the parish we are seeing rapid growth in our economic development initiatives;
an explosion in growth in the downtown area with new businesses and entertainment;
quality of life events have continued to expand attracting thousands
each year and the list goes on.
In the past year, East Baton Rouge Parish has been noted for the great strides among
national rankings as we have seen tremendous results from our economic initiatives.
In one of the top national business rankings, Baton Rouge moved up 38 spots in just one
year on the Forbes list of Best Cities for Jobs; the second largest one-year increase in
America. Inc. Magazine's 2007 rankings of Best Cities for Business listed Baton Rouge
up an amazing 219 places over the previous year, to number 59 among cities they identified as "Boomtowns". Expansion Magazine ranked East Baton Rouge Parish in the top
20 areas for bringing in business; eighth in the country for medium-size areas in business
recruitment and attraction. Additionally, Baton Rouge has been named as one of
the "Biggest Gainers" in the 2007 Best Performing Cities Index by the Milken Institute,
climbing to number 67 from number 132. These positive steps forward have been a
direct result of the increase in economic diversity in East Baton Rouge Parish.
We have also seen an attraction and substantial investment in the downtown area with
investment for 2007-2008 exceeding $500 million in construction and planning.
With our growth and expansion, we remain committed to celebrating our history. Baton
Rouge is a community with a mixture of rich heritages, where arts and culture play an
important role in our lives and help to define who we are.
Each year in Downtown Baton Rouge, we host a wide variety of community events that
attract residents and visitors, not only from Louisiana but internationally. We are the
host to the International Heritage Festival, showcasing more than 60 cultures that exist
in our community and the important role they have played in creating who we are. In the
Spring and Fall, the Live After 5 and Sunday in the Park free concerts showcase Louisiana music for the public. Our most notable event in the downtown area is Fest-For-All,
a weekend celebration of the arts with live music, performances and visual art exhibits.
Throughout the year, there is something exciting going on in Baton Rouge. Whether
you are a resident or visitor, I hope this book will provide you with the information
you need to enjoy our great City and Parish. |
